His friends call him by his nickname, "Butch". Tiger Woods once paid tribute to the great Lee Elder, the first Black man to play in The Masters, by saying "If there was no Lee, there would be no me." That's quite a tribute coming from the greatest golfer in history. Well, I have a similar saying about my dad - "If there was no he, there would be no me." Obviously that's true from a physical, biological father standpoint, but my dad was and is a real dad to me in every other sense of the word. He's my trainer and my mentor. He's there to advise me on things using his wisdom and experience. He's there to push me in training when I need to go that extra couple of rounds getting ready for championship caliber opposition. He's there, and has been there, to show me right from wrong and to have my back. Just like golf is too tough a sport for one man alone and requires even the very best, like Tiger Woods, to have a swing coach and a caddie, boxing is too tough a sport for one man (or woman), too, and requires at least one corner man who can be your eyes and ears in the corner, spotting your opponents' weaknesses and helping you plot strategy. I'll add more stuff about my father in the weeks to come. ]
Here's a picture of my dad. Do we look alike?
